Synthetic Cryolite (Sodium Cryolite) Synonyms: Sodium Aluminum Fluoride, Sodium Fluoroaluminate, Sodium Hexafluoroaluminate, Trisodium Hexafluoroaluminate, Sodium Aluminofluoride, Aluminum Sodium Fluoride, Kryolith, Kryocide, Cryolite, Ice Spar.
Molecular Formula: Na₃AlF₆
CAS No.: 13775-53-6
Molecular Weight: 210.00 Description: Synthetic Cryolite is a white crystalline powder, produced by combining hydrofluoric acid, sodium carbonate, and aluminum. It is primarily used as a flux in the electrolytic production of aluminum, as it effectively lowers the melting point of alumina. Beyond its role in aluminum production, synthetic cryolite has applications in various industries, such as glass, enamel, abrasives, and the manufacture of insecticides. It is also considered a safe insecticide for fruits and vegetables, as the fluoride ion inhibits many enzymes that contain iron, calcium, and magnesium. Physical Properties: Appearance: White crystalline powder or sandy granules, with a pinkish hue in some cases Specific Gravity: 2.95–3.05 g/cm³ Melting Point: ~1025°C Specific Heat: 1.056 J/g°C (between 18–100°C) Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, insoluble in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride Applications: Aluminum Smelting: Used as a flux in the aluminum smelting process through fused-salt electrolysis. Glass and Enamel Industries: Acts as an opalizer and auxiliary solvent in glass and enamel manufacturing. Insecticide: An effective insecticide for crops, especially for fruit and vegetables. Casting Flux: Used as a flux in aluminum alloy casting and in the production of ferrous alloys and effervescing steel. Abrasive Wheels: Utilized as a wear-resistant filler in resin and rubber-bonded abrasive wheels. Whitening Agent: Used as a flux and whitening agent for enamel glaze and in the production of milky white glass. Specifications: Parameter Unit Specification Assay % 98.5% Fluorine Content (F) % 54.28% Aluminum Content (Al) % 12.68% Free HF (Hydrofluoric Acid) % 0.002% Silica (SiO₂) % 0.6% Sulphate (SO₄) % 0.004% Iron (Fe₂O₃) % 0.05% Lead (Pb) % 0.02% Packaging: Packing: Available in 25kg or 50kg plastic woven bags lined with high-pressure polyethylene plastic bags. Features: Primary Use: Flux in aluminum smelting, lowering the melting point of alumina. Glass and Enamel: Used as an opalizer, opacifier, and auxiliary solvent. Agriculture: Safe insecticide for fruit and vegetable crops. Multi-Purpose: Used in aluminum alloy casting, abrasive wheels, and in various industrial applications. Synthetic Cryolite plays a critical role in the aluminum production process and has widespread use in other sectors, including agriculture, glass, enamel, and abrasives. Its efficiency in lowering melting points and its versatility in different industrial applications make it an essential compound in multiple industries.
