Cryolite Chemicals

Cryolite is an uncommon mineral of very limited natural distribution. Mostly considered a one locality mineral, although there are a few other minor localities, it was only found in large quantities on the west coast of Greenland.

It was used as a solvent of the aluminum rich ore, bauxite, which is a combination of aluminum oxides such as gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. It is very difficult to remove atoms of aluminum from atoms of oxygen which is necessary in order to produce aluminum metal. Cryolite made an excellent flux to make the process less expensive. Now it is too rare to be used for this purpose and sodium aluminum fluoride is produced artificially to fill the void.

A curious note about cryolite is the fact that it has a low index of refraction close to that of water. This means that if immersed in water, a perfectly clear colorless crystal of cryolite or powdered cryolite will essentially disappear. Even a specimen of cloudy cryolite will become more transparent and its edges will be less distinct, an effect similar to ice in water except that the ice floats.

Sodium Cryolite (Na₃AlF₆)

Sodium Cryolite, also known as sodium aluminum fluoride, sodium fluoaluminate, or kryolith, is a white crystalline powder or granular material. It is primarily used as a flux in the electrolytic production of aluminum, helping to lower the melting point of alumina. Sodium Cryolite is also used in various other industries, including glass manufacturing, enamel production, abrasives, and as an insecticide in agriculture.

Key Applications:
  • Aluminum Smelting: Used as a flux in the fused-salt electrolysis process to extract aluminum.
  • Glass & Enamel Industry: Functions as an opacifier, auxiliary solvent, and opalizer.
  • Insecticide: A relatively safe insecticide for crops, inhibiting certain enzymes by affecting iron, calcium, and magnesium.
  • Abrasive Manufacturing: Used as a wear-resistant filler in resin and rubber-bonded abrasive wheels.
  • Other Uses: In the production of aluminum alloys, ferrous alloys, and effervescing steel, as well as in the manufacture of milky white glass.

Sodium cryo lite , sodium aluminum fluoride, sodium fluoaluminate, sodium fluoroaluminate, sodium hexafluoroaluminate, trisodium hexafluoroaluminate, sodium aluminofluoride, aluminum sodium fluoride, kryolith, kryocide, cryolite, ice spar.

(Na3AlF6). Synthetic cryolite is a white crystalline powder manufactured from hydrofluoric acid, sodium carbonate, and aluminium. Synthetic cryolite is used chiefly as a flux in the electrolytic production of aluminum as it effectively lowers down the melting point of alumina. It is used in the glass and enamel industries, in bonded abrasives as a filler, in making salts of sodium and aluminum and porcelaneous glass and in the manufacture of insecticides. Cryolite is a relatively safe fruit and vegetable insecticide. The fluoride ion inhibits many enzymes that contain iron, calcium, and magnesium.

sodium cryolite is a white crystalline powder or a sandy-size granularity, and a pinkish crystalline powder or a sandy-size granularity as well. Sp.gr.2.95—3.05g/cm3, melting point about 1025°C, specific heat 1.056j/g°C at 18—100°C. It’s slightly soluble in water, but insoluble in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The content of its crystal water will be decreased while the increasing of the molecular ratio, therefore its loss on ignition will be also decreased while the increasing of the molecular ratio. After the paste of synthetic cryolite with different molecular ratio dehydrates, the loss on ignition at 800°C will appear 10.34%, 6.22% and 2.56% when the molecular ratio reaches 1.74, 2.14 and 2.63 reactively.

Features:

Sodium cryolite mainly used as a flux in the aluminum smelting by fused-salt electrolysis; also an opalizer in the manufacture of enamel; an opacifier and auxiliary solvent of glass and enamel; an insecticide of crops; a flux in aluminum alloy casting; and in the production of ferrous alloy and effervescing steel; as well as a wear-resistant filler for resin and rubber-boned abrasive wheels.

sodium cryolite is used as flux in aluminum smelting, cropper insecticide, flux and whiting agent of enamel glaze. It is also used in the manufacture of milky white glass, aluminum alloy and boiling steel. Its used as ingredient of grinding wheel.
